Day. #L#
Speaking about the police situation, Minister Sime Lucin said that
conditions for the modernisation of the police in line with
European standards had been created now that the police had been de-
politicised, de-militarised and professionalised.
Lucin said that priorities included the fight against organised
crime, police training, and the development of neighbourhood
police.
He added that the project of neighbourhood police had proven
successful in the prevention of crime already in its test phase.
Police director Ranko Ostojic said that the reformed police force
was smaller, but more efficient, recording excellent results. He
said that the level of security was high, that the number of the
gravest forms of crime was decreasing and that the rate of solved
crimes was on the rise.
Speaking about last year's police successes, Ostojic recalled some
resolved murder cases, robberies and the severing of a child
pornography chain.
The police have had good results also in combating smuggling,
illegal migrations, and corruption, Ostojic said, adding that the
police were also fulfilling all commitments towards the UN war
crimes tribunal.
Present at the ceremony were also parliament and government
officials, and representatives of the President's Office and the
diplomatic corps.
