NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Hina) - A possible resolution by the UN Security
Council that would confirm a more responsible role of the UN amongst
the people in Iraq would encourage Croatia and other countries to
become active in Iraq, Croatia's Foreign Minister Tonino Picula
said in New York on Monday. #L#
Picula will participate with President Stjepan Mesic at a general
discussion of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, which should
focus mostly on the battle against terrorism in Iraq. Speaking to
reporters on Monday, Picula said that everything would indicate
that a more precise and responsible role of the UN in Iraq was
necessary and that this should be a matter for negotiation between
the Security Council and allies in Iraq.
"We expect a possible new resolution that could open a path to
engagements in Iraq also to those countries that are at the moment
hesitating to do so," Picula said.
Asked whether Croatia would deploy its soldiers as part if a
stabilisation mission to Iraq if the UN passed a new resolution,
Picula said that a resolution by the Security Council that clearly
specified what each country would be involved in should it deploy
its troops or what sort of assistance would by expected by the
segment of the UN, would certainly relieve any discussion in
Croatia's public, amongst expert and political circles.
Picula said that Croatia's attitude was made known to Croatia's
friends in the US and that these would be reiterated during a
meeting with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and the foreign
ministries of another seven Southeast European countries as well as
at a bilateral meeting with under-secretary for political affairs
Marc Grossman.
"As far as Croatia is concerned, from the very start, in addition to
supporting the US in its struggle against terrorism, we have
expected more homogeneity and consistency in policies in world
organisations," he said.
Picula, who was to meet with the foreign ministers of Serbia-
Montenegro Goran Svilanovic and Igor Ivanov on Monday, said that
during his talks with Svilanovic, he would affirm the recent
progress made in relations between the two countries during the
talks.
