"It is common practice that officials of such rank be appointed to
chair such international bodies," according to an explanation
given from the government to reporters in Zagreb on Monday.
Croatia, together with Australia, is to start co-chairing the said
committee as of its regular annual convention, which is taking
place from 14 to 19 September in Bangkok, Thailand.
Croatia is among the first countries to have signed the Ottawa
Convention. So far, the document has been signed by 146 countries.
Reporters asked about the promotion of Plestina, who is the wife of
Premier Ivica Racan, after today's press reported that she was
given the ambassadorial rank.
