Labour and Welfare Minister Davorko Vidovic, who attended on behalf
of the government, recalled that 50 people would die at the camp
every day, which showed that the camp was like other Nazi World War
Two concentration camps.
Italian fascists set up the camp at Kampor in July 1942. Sixteen
thousand Slovenes, Croatians, and Jews were detained there,
including 2,500 children. Nearly 5,000 inmates died in inhumane
conditions.
After Italy capitulated in September 1943, the inmates, helped by
the island's residents, disarmed the Italian soldiers and
liberated the camp.
