KARLOVAC, Sept 13 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
president Ivo Sanader on Saturday called on the opposition party's
membership and sympathisers to get involved at all levels ahead of
coming parliamentary elections and mercilessly slam political
adversaries, but in a fair battle. #L#
"It is vital to avoid Croatian disunity and disharmony, and
national interests are more important than partisan interests," he
said at an HDZ assembly in Karlovac.
Sanader called on Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) constituents to vote
for the HDZ, saying a vote for the HSS was a vote for the Social
Democrats (SDP) given that the SDP and the HSS "have already signed
a pact to cooperate after elections as well".
Commenting on Serbia and Montenegro President Svetozar Marovic's
apology to Croatia's citizens earlier this week, Sanader said
Croatia had been the winner in the 1990s Homeland War and did not
need anybody's apology.
"One has to resolve open issues, such as detained or missing
persons, the issue of the border, of succession (to the former
Yugoslavia), of stolen works of art and cultural goods, archives,"
Sanader said.
He welcomed economic cooperation in the region, but expressly
rejected the possibility of forming a Balkan regional union.
Vice president Jadranka Kosor estimated the HDZ would win 35
percent of the vote or more, "which will be enough to win the
majority in parliament with centre and centre-right parties".
Croatia will then give war veterans, the police, the army, women,
and families their dignity back, she said.
Another vice president, Vladimir Seks, said an HDZ team of experts
was working on an anti-corruption programme, and highlighted the
need of "truly reforming the justice system".
