does not vary significantly from the average elsewhere in Croatia,

following Tuesday's meeting with Serb representatives from the
region. #L#
Lucin spoke about the security situation in the Danube river
region, with special emphasis on inter-ethnic relations, with
Jovan Ajdukovic, the president of the Joint Council of
Municipalities with a Serb majority population, and Vukovar-Srijem
County Deputy Prefect Mirko Jagetic.
Lucin and his interlocutors condemned the excesses that occurred,
mostly involving the destruction of national symbols, and
expressed satisfaction that these excesses did not spread and take
on any political connotations.
Lucin condemned the statements of some politicians who, as he said,
instead of attempting to calm the situation, added fuel to the
fire.
"We need to preserve the good security situation particularly
during the upcoming elections," he said, estimating that more
preventative measures were required if the security situation was
to improve as well as direct contact with citizens themselves.
According to Jagetic, Serb representatives will endeavour to
preserve the current level of security, particularly during the
elections, and to avoid any radical situations which could not only
damage Croatia but the Serb community as well, particularly when it
is establishing itself as a fair partner.
