ZAGREB, Sept 9 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Tuesday he did not expect anything special or spectacular of his visit to Belgrade on Wednesday. #L# "Croatia wishes to expedite the stabilisation of the entire region and for open issues to be outlined and resolved in a transparent fashion," Mesic told reporters on the Brijuni Isles, adding that this primarily referred to restitution of property, refugee returns, Croatian companies' assets in Serbia and Montenegro, and shedding light on persons gone missing during the 1990s war. Asked if he would indeed advocate the permanent abolishment of visa requirements for Serbia and Montenegro citizens, Mesic said Croatia had to show that it was a democratic country which was not afraid of the flow of people, goods and capital. "That way we shall show that we are an open society while not amnestying anyone guilty of crimes committed in this region." Mesic's one-day visit to Belgrade is the first by a Croatian president after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. Commenting on the visit, Great Britain's Daily Telegraph said it was motivated by Croatia's wish to draw closer to European Union membership by nurturing good neighbourly relations. (hina) ha
