Speaking to reporters after talks with his Croatian counterpart
Tonino Picula, Svoboda said the Czech Republic, which is a member of
NATO and joins the EU next year, was willing to help friendly
Croatia avoid difficulties and mistakes in negotiations for
European Union membership.
Svoboda went on to say Croatia-Czech Republic relations were great
and that his country wished to intensify economic cooperation and
was interested in participating in privatisation in Croatia.
Minister Picula said Croatia was interested in reducing the deficit
in trade with the Czech Republic, and that Zagreb was encouraged by
the Czech open door policy with regard to EU and NATO enlargement.
The two ministers also talked about tourism and military issues.
Svoboda was today also received by Deputy Prime Minister Ante
Simonic. They expressed satisfaction with good bilateral
relations, and agreed conditions were good for cooperation in
science and education.
Svoboda said Croatia was the principal destination for Czech
tourists, recalling that a million Czechs vacationed in Croatia
this year.
