CROATIAN PRESIDENT SAYS VISIT TO LIBYA SUCCESSFUL

TRIPOLI, Aug 14 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic told reporters Thursday he believed the visit of a Croatian delegation to Libya was successful, especially because everything planned had been realised, especially in the economic sphere. #L# In the past several days, the two countries have agreed to cooperate in industry, shipbuilding, the exploitation and refining of oil, food and agricultural industries, as well as in pharmacy and medicine, Mesic said. He stressed the two countries had the opportunity to jointly appear on third markets. The president believes that the agreement reached between Libya and the United States on the payment of damages to the victims of the 1988 attack on a PanAm plane over Lockerby in Scotland will change Libya's status in international mechanisms, which will benefit Croatian politics and economy. "Croatia was the first to offer a hand of friendship to Libya and the Libyans will certainly not forget that," Mesic said. Mesic today visited Libyan President Muammar al-Qaddafi's residence destroyed in a US bombardment of Tripoli in 1986. The president also visited a house in which an assassination had been attempted on Qaddafi in 1969, and the Leptis Magna archaeological site. The site was a settlement set up by Phoenicians 3,000 years ago and is the most impressive Roman archaeological site in northern Africa. The site is on the UNESCO world heritage list. Mesic's programme ends tonight when he will be presented with an honorary doctorate of Tripoli University. He will travel back to Zagreb Friday morning. (hina) lml
