In mid-May, the Croatian Electricity Board (HEP) forwarded to
Slovenia a request for the payment of US$53.6 million in damages for
Slovenia's failure to deliver to HEP electricity from the Krsko
plant from July 1, 2002 to April 18, 2003.
Jurcic confirmed he had received a letter from Slovene
Environmental Protection and Zoning Minister Janez Kopac which
suggests that talks on the damages claim start as soon as possible
in order to settle the issue in a peaceful and mutually acceptable
manner.
The Slovene side did not respond directly to our request but it did
express readiness to start negotiations, Jurcic told reporters.
The joint commission on Krsko will include an agreement on the start
of talks on the Croatian claim in its September agenda, he added.
