SLOVENE OPPOSITION LEADER SLAMS GOVT. OVER RELATIONS WITH CROATIA

LJUBLJANA, Aug 18 (Hina) - Slovene opposition leader Janez Jansa said on Monday the Anton Rop cabinet was at a loss as to how to resolve open issues with Croatia and was, as a result, "running on the defensive", claiming that relations with Croatia could not be solved due to the pre-election time.
#L# Jansa told reporters Rop had ridiculed his idea to attempt to settle the issue of Croatian citizens' deposits in Ljubljanska Bank, and said Croatia's announcement of the establishment of an economic zone in the Adriatic Sea was the consequence of inactivity on the Slovene government's part. Jansa said the announcement was a tactical issue for Croatia because such an economic zone would not be detrimental to Slovenia as a country soon to join the European Union. He also slammed Rop's tactics regarding the jointly owned nuclear power plant Krsko, saying it was the one to blame for the current situation in which it might be liable to pay damages to Croatia's power supply company HEP for failing to deliver electricity.
