ZAGREB, Aug 6 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Court has concluded there
are grounds for launching a full investigation against former state
prosecutor Krunoslav Canjuga and a Zagreb attorney Mirko Batarelo
for offering and receiving bribes, the court said Wednesday. #L#
The Office for the Prevention of Corruption and Organised Crime
(USKOK) in May suspected Canjuga of receiving bribes from Batarelo
and disclosing official secrets. The institution requested an
investigation be launched against the two.
A Zagreb County Court's investigating judge, Ratko Scekic,
dismissed the request in mid-June, assessing that the evidence
collected by the USKOK was insufficient to establish founded
suspicion that Batarelo bribed Canjuga for information about acts
and decisions of the State Prosecution in cases in which Batarelo
was the defence attorney.
The State Prosecution appealed Scekic's decision, after which the
court decided there was founded suspicion that Canjuga and Batarelo
had indeed committed the crimes.
