JURIS PROTECTA ASSOCIATION INSISTS MONEY BE GIVEN BACK TO EMIGRANTS

ZAGREB, July 29 (Hina) - The Juris Protecta association has accused the incumbent Croatian government of "trying to appropriate money of Croatian emigrants," which was intended for the defence of the country in the early 1990s and which was subsequently transferred from a bank account in Austria to the bank account of the Croatian Democratic Union's fund called "Zaklada Hrvatskog Drzavnog Zavjeta".
#L# Instead of giving money back to Croatian emigrants who had remitted it to the bank account in Villach, Austria, from the outbreak of the Homeland War, the current government also shows inclinations towards assets that do not belong to it, the head of the association, Zdravko Zeljko, said at a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday. The disputed cash from the Austrian account was transferred to the account of the HDZ, the then ruling party in Croatia, by a senior party official, Hrvoje Sarinic. Last year, Croatia asked for the funds through a request issued by the Office of the Public Prosecutor. Although the government and the HDZ later agreed on the hand-over of over 1.5 million euros, this has not happened to date, Zeljko said. (hina) ms sb
