THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, July 23 (Hina) - The Prosecutor's Office of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
on Wednesday requested an eight-year prison term for Bosnian Serb
Predrag Banovic, who last month enter a plea of guilty to the
charges referring to the persecution of Muslims and Croats during
the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. #L#
Banovic, former guard in the Keraterm camp, pleaded guilty to one
count of the indictment (crime against humanity - the persecution
of the non-Serb population from Prijedor region, detention,
torture and killings in the Keraterm camp), and in return the ICTY
prosecutor's office dropped other war crimes charges against him.
The Hague-based tribunal considered Banovic's acceptance of
responsibility for the committed crimes as an extenuating
circumstance. The hearing at which the verdict will be delivered
has not yet been scheduled.
Banovic was arrested in Belgrade in November 2001 and extradited to
the UN court at The Hague.
