OSIJEK, July 16 (Hina) - Croatian farmers, unhappy with this year's
purchase price of wheat, ended their protests in the Slavonia
region at about 14.00 hours Wednesday. #L#
Farmers began protesting at around noon, using their agricultural
machines to block one lane of about 15 two-lane roads.
Members of the federation of farmers' associations from Slavonia
and Baranja wanted the wheat price to be 1.3 kuna per kilogram
because they believe that the proposed price of one kuna cannot
cover production costs.
The leader of the federation, Antun Laslo, told Hina that protests
were held at about 20 locations in four counties. He added that they
were not held in Vukovar County because the Croatian Peasant Party
used its influence there to prevent them.
Osijek county police said no incidents were reported during the
protests, adding that charges would be brought against organisers
for failing to announce them in advance.
