ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - A majority of trade unions joined in the
Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) voted
against changes to the Labour Act at a referendum held on June 16-
18, the SSSH stated on Thursday. #L#
Of a total of 201,000 SSSH members, 94,000 or 46.8% took part in the
referendum on negotiations between the government, employers and
unions on changes to the Labour Act and a set of by-laws.
Of that number, 77,500 or 82.4% stated the results of the
negotiations were unacceptable, while 15,000 or 15.8% assessed
them positively. There were 1.8% invalid ballots.
Votes cast by 39,000 members of the Agricultural Workers' Union,
which organised a separate vote, were not included in the results of
the SSSH referendum.
Even though the referendum does not have a binding character since
less than the necessary two-thirds or 134,000 union members took
part in it, by circling "NO" on the referendum ballot, the union
membership has demonstrated a high level of dissatisfaction with
plans to diminish workers' rights, the SSSH said in a press
release.
