Jadranko Mijalic of the Social Liberals highlighted FINA's
positive business, with 65.8 million kuna (EUR8.8 mln) made in
profits last year, and revenue going up four and expenditure 11
percent.
Responding to remarks that FINA's transactions contained elements
of monopoly, Mijalic said there were some state-owned financial
companies in a far more privileged position than FINA which did not
generate profits.
Ivan Suker of the Croatian Democratic Union said the government had
missed the chance to create a strong state bank which would
significantly change relations on the financial market, something
he said was of strategic interest for the country.
Suker pointed to the fact that 97 percent of bank assets were held by
foreigners, and that commercial banks' debts to their parent banks
abroad accounted for a large portion of Croatia's external debt.
When reforming money transfers, the government should have
considered creating its own bank, from FINA and the Postal Bank,
which technically were the only ones ready to carry out money
transfers, said Suker.
