ZAGREB, June 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Deputy Prime Minister in
charge of cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague
(ICTY), Goran Granic, told Sunday's Vjesnik paper that the latest
developments in the case of ICTY indictee Ante Gotovina took place
because of the "readiness of General Gotovina". #L#
Asked whether the government had information which would indicate
that the fugitive general would soon be ready to appear in court,
Granic said: "One must look at this as a project and not as a
coincidental incident which started with one (Gotovina's)
interview."
"This is how one should look at the development of the situation,
namely that everything was planned and that there is readiness.
Information has been launched and certain mechanism have been
started. The next normal step is Gotovina's appearance in court,"
said Granic.
Citing a source close to the government, the daily said there was a
possibility that the fugitive general be interviewed in Zageb if he
agrees to talk to ICTY investigators as an indictee. The
questioning should take place in the period when the technical
procedure of his extradition to The Hague is being organised.
Granic is confident there is enough evidence for Gotovina's
indictment to be changed. He, however, believes only Gotovina can
influence the amending of the indictment by appearing in court.
Asked to comment on documents which the President's Office
forwarded to the government on Thursday, Granic said he was unable
to speculate about the context of the documents, adding that if
necessary the government would de-classify the documents and
forward them to the ICTY Prosecution.
