UNITED NATIONS, June 10 (Hina) - The United States on Monday
proposed a resolution to the UN Security Council which would extend
the exclusion of US troops in UN peace missions from prosecution by
the International Criminal Court (ICC). #L#
The resolution, which the USA expects to be adopted on Thursday,
seeks immunity from the ICC for the staff in UN peace operations
coming from the countries which did not ratify the ICC's statute.
Last year the Security Council unanimously adopted the same
resolution in which Americans were excluded from the ICC's
jurisdiction after the USA threatened to block all UN peace
operations by using its right of veto.
Washington needs the extension of exclusion of US troops from the
ICC's jurisdiction until it completes negotiations on bilateral
agreements with individual countries regarding the non-
extradition of US soldiers to the ICC. So far, it has signed such
agreements with 37 countries.
