The discussion was organised in this coastal town, which is
currently hosting Croatian radio days, by the association of
Croatia's radio-stations and culture ministry.
Talking with owners and directors of radio and TV stations and local
papers and representatives of the national association of local
televisions, Culture Minister Antun Vujic, said the purpose of the
new bills was to enhance the autonomy and freedom of media and to
help protect rights of reporters particularly in cases when
programmes bases are changed in the media in which they are
employed.
The minister said that various monopolies in the media had been set
up but also outside them which exerted influence on the media, and
added that new laws would guarantee greater autonomy of the media
with better transparency of the ownership structure.
He said that the pluralism in the media was particularly taken into
account and therefore a fund would be set up for which three percent
from Croatian Radio and Television subscription fees would be
earmarked. Thus, some 30 million kuna would be collected for co-
financing activities of local media and their professional
development. In addition, another 600 to 800 jobs will be created,
Vujic said.
