PULA, May 31 (Hina) - Addressing participants in the 38th seminar of accountants and employees in the financial sector in Pula on Saturday, Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Slavko Linic said a strengthened and consolidated economy was an achievement of the ruling coalition nobody could contest. #L# It is frequently forgotten that shipbuilding and food-processing industries have been successfully rehabilitated, which cost some 13 billion kuna, Linic said. The incumbent government inherited a huge deficit, which was incurred through the former government's covering up its unlawful activities and incompetence, Linic said, adding that the government was still financing a number of incompetent managements, particularly in the shipbuilding industry. Speaking about the government's economic policy, Linic said it had resulted in increased investments, new jobs and a reduction of unemployment, as well as in the growth of GDP and regular payment of interest on the foreign debt which totalled six billion dollars. The government is aware of the danger of the public debt which now accounts for 52% of GDP, he said, adding that this was below the limit set by the European Union. Privatisation has not been continued successfully, few companies have been privatised and the process has been marked by excesses and conflicts in the coalition, Linic said. Until the end of the year the government will be investing efforts into meeting requirements from the Agreement on Stabilisation and Association with the EU, he said, announcing the adjustment of 40 laws with the European legislation by the end of the year. The Pula seminar, which started on May 29, ended today. Although their attendance had been announced, Economy Minister Ljubo Jurcic and Croatian National Bank governor Zeljko Rohatinski did not participate. The event, organised by the Croatian Association of Accountants and Employees in the Financial Sector, gathered some 500 participants - government members, accountants, auditors and financial analysts from Croatia and abroad.
