ZAGREB, May 28 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament President Zlatko Tomcic said on Wednesday the campaign of Caritas and the Franciscan Institute for Peace Culture to ban the work of shops on Sundays was a noble action, aimed at helping and protecting those who were deprived of their rights and needed help in claiming them. #L# Tomcic made the statement at a press conference on banning the work of shops on Sundays, which was attended by the president and the director of Croatia's Caritas, Ivan Prendja and Mario Bebic, and the head of the Franciscan Institute for Peace Culture, Bozo Vuleta. Tomcic handed to Prendja a petition for banning the work of shops on Sundays with the signatures of 32 Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) MPs and members of the party presidency. The HSS will advocate a ban on the work of shops on Sundays and holidays, with some exceptions which will be regulated by law, Tomcic said. Caritas president Ivan Prendja said the initiative had met with powerful response in the public. The campaign has a civil character and is supported by the Croatian Bishops' Conference, he said. Officials at Caritas said the petition had been signed by at least 450,000 people in 1,500 parishes. (hina) rml sb
