Asked why he did not meet Zadar mayor Bozidar Kalmeta during the
visit, Mesic said: "Because I did not want to be photographed under
the picture of a man for whom an arrest warrant was issued and who is
at large", referring to a portrait of General Ante Gotovina, an
honorary citizen of Zadar, which is displayed at the city hall.
"It would be uncivilised of me as head of state to have my picture
taken under the picture of a man who is wanted by the institutions of
the state which I represent," Mesic said.
Asked about the tapping of phones of Gotovina's friends in Zadar and
whether the National Security Council made any decision in that
regard last night, Mesic said that "everybody would like their
phones to be tapped, but nobody's phones are tapped". "If someone
has evidence (on tapping), they should address a court, but they
will not succeed." "Only those phones which need to be tapped are
tapped," Mesic said, adding that "Zadar mayor Bozidar Kalmeta and
county prefect Sime Prtenjaca's phones were not tapped".
