Croatia's public debt in February, including domestic and foreign
debt, totalled 95 billion kuna (12.5 billion euros). According to
international standards, the debt accounts for 52.6% of the
country's GDP, Crkvenac said, adding that Croatia was a liquid,
solvent and in no way overindebted country.
The debt includes the state debt, the debts of public companies,
units of local government and collateral.
Foreign debt in February accounted for some 16.5 million dollars,
which is not a debt which the state could not repay normally,
however, it must be taken care of, Crkvenac said answering a
question by MP Ivic Pasalic of the Croatian Bloc.
Pasalic says that Croatia's foreign debt has increased from nine to
16.5 billion dollars, that exports are falling while imports are
increasing and that the Croatian National Bank (HNB) governor has
stated that he will resign because he does not want to be
responsible for the government's loan policy.
Crkvenac would not directly comment on the claim about the
governor's resignation, but stated the government and the central
bank were cooperating well and he saw no reason for
misunderstandings between them.
