Addressing a news conference in Rijeka, Slavko Linic said it would
be better if elections were held towards the end of the year so that
the new cabinet could have time to draw up the state budget.
Linic said the SDP wished to win a new government term with the
parties which used to make the six-party ruling coalition -- the
Croatian People's Party, the Croatian Peasant Party, Libra, the
Istrian Democratic Assembly, and the Liberal Party.
Those parties successfully carried the burden of changes and the
SDP wants to join them in completing Croatia's transition by
winning another term, said Linic.
He said the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), currently the
strongest opposition party, realised it could not run in the ballot
alone and was, therefore, discussing forming a coalition with other
parties. "The HDZ has learned from our experience that coalitions
are better," he said, adding in coalitions success was greater,
errors fewer, and possibility of misuse smaller.
