Jovanovic told Hina that the charges against him were related to the
state of emergency in Serbia and an attempt to ban the daily.
The ICTY issued an indictment on October 2002 because Jovanovic
released the name of a protected witness.
The charges were confirmed yesterday by Judge Carmel Agius, who
noted that Jovanovic had publicly disclosed the identity of a
protected witness in the trial against Slobodan Milosevic and as
such consciously violated regulation 77(A) of the ICTY Regulation
on proceedings and evidence.
The charges also noted that witness K32 later received threats once
his identity was discovered.
Should Jovanovic fail to attend the trial, the Court will issue a
warrant for his arrest and extradition.
The penalty punishment for violations of this regulation can be
from one to seven years imprisonment or a fine of up to 100,000 euros
or a combination of the two.
Jovanovic is the first reporter charged with disclosing the
identity of a protected witness during a trial held before the
ICTY.
