Stambolic's body was discovered about ten days ago on Fruska Gora,
north of Belgrade. The DNA analysis showed that the remains
belonged to the killed Serbian president.
Media and members of a committee for freeing Ivan Stambolic, which
was established after Stambolic's kidnapping, accused Slobodan
Milosevic and his wife Mirjana Markovic of the abduction and
killing of the former Serbian President. Mirjana Markovic left the
country in late February 2003, several days prior the assassination
of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. She is allegedly in
Russia from where she is expected to be extradited to the
authorities in Belgrade.
According to the Serbian government's decision, all flags on state
institutions are flying at half mast out of respect for the killed
president.
