Last night's ceremony was also attended by President Stjepan Mesic,
the event's sponsor, who spends his holidays on Hvar - the island
which the renowned US tourist magazine "Traveler" has declared one
of the world's ten most beautiful islands.
Hvar mayor Zoran Dumancic recalled that organised tourism on the
island had started on May 15, 1868 with the establishment of the
"Hygienist Society", which was founded with the purpose of
providing for guests.
The programme also included the showing of the film "Croatian Dream
Hvar" on the island's natural beauties and cultural heritage. The
authors of the film are Ivo Pervan, Matej Mestrovic and Veljko
Barbieri.
The event, organised by Hvar's town leadership and tourist
association and the Suncani Hvar hotel company, was also attended
by members of the diplomatic corps and numerous public figures.
The next presentation of Hvar's tourism will be held in Ljubljana in
April.
The central event marking the anniversary will be held in Hvar in
May.
