"Being shaken by the tragic attack of the United States and its
allies on Iraq, the bishops voice their solidarity with innocent
victims, and show concern over consequences for the international
relations. Sharing the attitude of the Holy Father, we reiterate
the appeal to all the faithful for prayers for peace in the world,"
read a statement released after the end of the dignitaries' two-day
conference in the southern city of Mostar on Saturday night.
Besides Catholic bishops in Bosnia -- Cardinal Vinko Puljic, Banja
Luka Bishop Franjo Komarica (who is presiding over the conference),
Mostar Bishop Ratko Peric -- present at the Mostar meeting were also
Apostolic Nuncio in Sarajevo, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, Split
Archbishop Marin Barisic on behalf of Croatia's bishops'
conference and Kotor Bishop Ilija Janjic on behalf of the bishops'
conference of Serbia and Montenegro.
The participants in the Mostar event considered programmes for the
preparation for the visit of John Paul II to Banja Luka, set for late
June, when the pope is to beatify a Catholic intellectual, Ivan
Merz, born in that north-western Bosnian city.
The bishops describe the second visit of the Holy Father to Bosnia
as "the unique event for the Catholics and other citizens of Bosnia-
Herzegovina."
