ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - Croatia's export in January 2003 reached 2.75 billion kuna (US$390 mln), while import amounted to 5.28 bln kuna ($749 mln), putting the foreign trade deficit at 2.53 bln kuna ($359 mln), according to
provisional data of the Central Bureau of Statistics.

2.75 billion kuna (US$390 mln), while import amounted to 5.28 bln
kuna ($749 mln), putting the foreign trade deficit at 2.53 bln kuna
($359 mln), according to provisional data of the Central Bureau of

The import/export ratio in January was 52.1 percent, up from 45.7
percent last December.
Comparing data from this January to those of January 2001, in the
domestic currency export increased by 2.6 and import by 3.5
percent. However, when expressed in USD, export went up 23.3 and
import 24.6 percent. This is due to the drop in value of the U.S.-
kuna ratio -- this January the dollar fell by 17 percent as against
January 2002.
Croatia's chief foreign trade partners remain the countries of the
European Union, with Italy leading among them.
Croatian export there this January went up 32 percent from January
2002 to $76.3 mln, while import from Italy increased by 29.1 percent
to $108.8 mln.
Germany is Croatia's second biggest trade partner. Export there was
up 7.8 percent to $57.1 mln, while import jumped 25.5 percent to
$120.5 mln.
Croatia's export to neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina rose by
29.5 percent to $50.6 mln, while import from there increased by 17.5
percent to $9.2 mln.
Bosnia remains one of the few countries with which Croatia has a
considerable trade surplus. Another is Serbia and Montenegro,
where export this January amounted to $9.8 mln, while import
revolved around $3 mln.
