Activists of the South East European Environmental NGOs Network
(SEEENN), who tackle the effect of the power sector on the
environment, held a two-day meeting in Rijeka in the northern
Adriatic.
The event, organised by the Green Action, was attended by 25
activists from 14 associations and nine countries -- Romania,
Bulgaria, Albania, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Montenegro,
Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia.
The appeal against the pipeline which would transport Russian oil
to a terminal in Croatia's Omisalj will also be sent to the European
Union and European environmental protection NGOs, Toni Vidan of the
Green Action said on Saturday.
SEEENN members believe the building of big hydroelectric power
plants in the region should be stopped as they disrupt the
ecological balance and their revenue is smaller than that of eco-
tourism.
SEEENN demands upgrading the protection of the environment in the
power sector and the closure of all nuclear power plants in the long
term.
This network maintains there are sufficient sources of renewable
energy in the region as well as experts to use them, and will to that
end ask that governments in the region come up with better
programmes for the use of these sources.
