"Political competitors are trying to depict the HSLS as a party
which is turning right, but we must not take the bait, as the HSLS
has its own path and the membership should trust the party's
leadership," Drazen Budisa said at a session of the HSLS governing
council.
"We used to be accused of turning left, as we cooperated with left
parties, but we have shown flexibility," he added.
"After the elections the HSLS will be the third strongest party in
the country, and our success will thwart political engineering and
prove that the HSLS is an unavoidable factor in decision-making in
Croatian politics," the party's chief said.
He asserted that the incumbent authorities had made many wrong
moves detrimental to Croatia.
He recalled that one of the serious mistakes was a bilateral
agreement with Slovenia on the joint nuclear power plant in Krsko.
With regard to the ratification of that deal, the incumbent
government fell, he said, and the issue caused a split in the HSLS
leadership but not among its membership.
Budisa reiterated the HSLS's stand on insisting on a peaceful
solution to the Iraqi crisis which might be provided by U.N.
Security Council resolutions.
He accused the current authorities of showing a servile mentality
by unilaterally aligning with the United States and the Vilnius
Group member-states.
