"We have received confirmation from the Croatian Embassy in the
United States that three banks there promised to indefinitely
freeze the assets pending a court decision which would be binding
for the banks," Koketi told Hina.
The account at the JP Morgan Chase bank contains 37.5 million
dollars, 2.2 million were deposited at the Bank of New York and
18,000 dollars are on the account at the American Express Bank.
Koketi said Croatia had information about some other accounts in
which SFRY funds had been deposited, but it had not requested that
they be blocked because the money belonged to various companies
from the former Yugoslavia.
The assets in the three New York banks were frozen in the nick of
time, as a decision of the US Office of Foreign Assets Control
(OFAC) to unblock some of the former federation's accounts in
American institutions came into effect on Tuesday, said Koketi.
