The rallies have shown there is a Croatian public with a voice which
objects to a new war and advocates the building of world peace, said
Hrvoje Juric, a representative for the initiative.
"We have succeeded in showing what the 'other Croatia' really
thinks."
Drazen Simlesa, another representative, said the organiser's wish
had not been for the rallies to turn into anti-American protests and
expressed regret that a U.S. flag had been set on fire.
They said 4,700 people in Zagreb had signed a petition against a war
in Iraq and 2,350 another against Croatia joining NATO. The
petitions may be signed until Saturday, they said.
Asked if they cooperated with similar initiatives in other European
cities, Juric and Simlesa said they did mostly with people in
Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia and Montenegro.
After the two petitions have been signed they will be forwarded to
the government. Juric and Simlesa also hope to be invited for talks
at the foreign and defence ministries.
