As reported by the Economy Ministry, both sides agreed that it was
vital to protect the Adriatic and that this would require enormous
effort.
Interest in protecting the Adriatic has grown following the signing
of an agreement on the Druzba Adria project which will enable
Russian oil to be delivered to Omisalj.
In an effort to diminish the risk of pollution in the Adriatic, the
Croatian government will initiate procedures to adopt a convention
on the protection of the Adriatic Sea. All countries which have an
exit to the Adriatic Sea should participate in the initiative. The
objective is to adopt measures that would protect the Adriatic,
Minister Jurcic said.
The statement also notes that the measures should include standards
for ships that enter the Adriatic as well as the development of a
protection system in case of possible incidents. This is something
that cannot be contained within country borders and so the problem
of caring for the Adriatic in fact concerns all those countries that
share the sea, the statement says.
The Italian delegation, headed by Rimini mayor Alberto Ravaioli,
pointed out that Rimini had a project and financial means to protect
the environment in the Adriatic, the Croatian Economy Ministry's
statement said.
