RIJEKA, Jan 30 (Hina) - During a meeting with representatives of the

Maurizio Tremul, president of the assembly of the Italian Union,
which is an umbrella organisation for ethnic Italians in Croatia
and Slovenia, said at a news conference that they received
assurances that there were no plans to form parallel institutions.
In recent months there have been speculations that the Trieste-
based university could found an institution which would take over
the implementation of programmes and care for the Italian minority
in the two countries.
Tremul added that after it unblocked funds earmarked by the Italian
government and the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, the university
would by Monday pay 86,000 euros of overdue funds from last year for
the union.
The funds of the Italian government and the Friuli-Giulia region
for the Italian Union in Croatia and Slovenia are forwarded via the
Trieste-based university and the governing body of that
institution stopped sending the money to the union in late 2002.
The university said on Wednesday that it would unblock the funds.
