At a meeting with the heads of five union federations, the president
called on the social partners - the government, unions and
employers - to find a solution through consensus, saying that
problems cannot be solved unilaterally.
Nobody should set ultimatums, because this is about vital social
interests, Mesic said.
Prior to the Labour Act amendments coming into force, citizens must
be enabled to exercise their labour rights in courts, said Mesic and
added that severance wages should be paid as stipulated by the law.
Unionists requested Mesic's support in negotiations with the
government.
Contentious parts, such as severance wages, dismissal periods,
temporary employment and the number of employees with small
enterprises would additionally be forwarded to parliament as
amendments.
The government, however, said it would forward the amendments to
the Labour Act to parliament on Thursday. Government officials have
on several occasions reiterated that the government can fall but
the amendments to the labour legislation must be implemented.
