"You, journalists should be more aware than others of the impact and
power of the uttered and written word. You should know how much
benefit could be made by complete, timely and true information and
how much damage with long-term consequences could be made due to
manipulation of information and the media," the Croatian head of
state said, voicing confidence that reporters would be able to cope
with challenges of their profession and professional ethics.
He recalled that Croatia would soon officially submit its
application for the European Union's membership, and appealed on
reporters to cover Croatia's bids to join Euro-Atlantic
integration processes.
"Write about successes, halts and causes of halts. You can help in
efforts aimed at making citizens aware of the advantages Croatia
will have from its membership in the Union, but also of what we must
do on our own to accomplish the objective," Mesic said adding that a
part of commitments referred to the media.
On behalf of the gathered journalists and media representatives,
the Croatian Journalists' Society president, Dragutin Lucic,
thanked Mesic for the reception.
