Upon receiving reports on the implementation of the strike, the
union's governing council decided by a majority vote to discontinue
the strike on Wednesday, January 15.
Union leader Dalimir Kuba thanked in a statement to union members
and other employees in primary schools for taking part in the
strike, which started on Monday.
Explaining the reasons for discontinuing the strike, which was to
last until January 17, Kuba said "the Croatian government did not
agree to negotiations on an increase in the salaries of primary
school employees and continued with intimidation, threats and the
obstruction of the strike, thus violating laws and collective
agreements it signed".
The union demanded a 10% increase in the gross salaries of all
employees in primary schools, slamming the government for having
allocated additional funds for the school system to cover an
increase in the salaries of teachers alone and disregarding non-
teaching staff.
The Education and Sports Ministry this evening issued a statement
describing the union's decision as "expected, considering the low
turnout and unrealistic union demands".
The ministry stated that it was "understandable... that the
decision, the only reasonable one at the moment, could have been
made by union leaders alone, because they started the strike".
