ZAGREB, Jan 13 (Hina) - The Croatian Employers' Association (HUP)
on Monday strongly condemned statements by union federations on a
general strike to be staged due to announced changes to the Labour
Act. #L#
The strike is a direct attack on new investments, both domestic and
foreign, it is aimed against economic growth and diminishes the
prospect of creating new jobs, the HUP said.
Opposition to the changes to the Labour Act is opposition to a
realistic and efficient labour market, the employment of hundreds
of thousands of unemployed persons, the creation of new jobs and the
improvement of the competitiveness of Croatia's economy, the HUP
says.
The proposed amendments do not change or reduce workers' rights as
defined by branch collective agreements and individual work
contracts and no one is challenging the unions' right to fight for
the rights of their members and try to negotiate the best possible
working conditions in direct talks with employers, the HUP stated.
Most countries in transition have adjusted their labour
legislation with the aim of making it more flexible and increasing
competitiveness, the association said.
The first contacts between the HUP and its members show that the
announcement of the strike alone had affected their business, which
is evident in increased caution and mistrust of investors and
business partners, the association said.
