The Croatian Teachers' Union has announced a strike in elementary
schools to take place between January 13 and 17 because the
additional 200 million kuna of budgetary funds earmarked this year
for the education system will be used to increase the wages of
teachers, while the wages of non-teaching staff will not be
raised.
The Independent Union of High School Employees of Croatia will
stage a day-long strike in high schools and student dormitories on
January 15, protesting against the government's decision.
According to Vavra, teachers will not be paid for days spent on
strike.
Students are entitled to education and teachers to work, therefore
it is inadmissible for unions to call on students not to go to
school. The unionists must not shut down schools or force those
willing to work to go on strike, Vavra said.
Union demands for a six percent wage increase for administration
and technical staff are not realistic and are contrary to the
government's policy, the deputy education minister said.
