This was the conclusion made by a co-ordinating body for Slovenia's
bids to join EuroAtlantic integration processes, at its closed
session on Monday. This body includes high government officials and
members of parliamentary committees.
Parliamentary parties and the national assembly should give their
opinion on the conclusion by Wednesday. The parliament should by
that time call a referendum, as at least 30 days must pass between
the date when the referendum is called and its implementation.
According to latest opinion polls, Slovenes are more in favour of
joining the EU than NATO. Results of those polls show that over 60
percent of respondents would vote for the admission into the EU,
while some 50 percent are for the membership in the Alliance.
The government led by Premier Antun Rop is intending to launch a
campaign to inform citizens about advantages from Slovenia's
accession into these two associations.
