Th initiative for the lawsuit before the Strasbourg-based court was
launched by a cultural society led by an architect from Trieste,
Gianna Duda Marinelli, who came from the Croatian island of Cres.
Ms. Marinelli asserts that Croatia and Slovenia, as signatories of
the European convention on human rights, should protect the
ownership rights. The society was established in 1998 with the aim
to offer assistance to Italian refugees from Croatia and Slovenia.
Asked how this initiative matches with the fact that Italy has
already paid damages to some refugees - ethnic Italians from the
said countries - Gianna Duda Marinelli responded that the refugees
called "esuli" were ready to give back all the money they received
as the compensation.
