The new members, which replaced Ireland, Mauritius, Norway,
Singapore and Columbia, were proposed by their regional groups.
The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members: China,
France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and United
States, and another five members whose term expires on December 31,
2003: Guinea, Mexico, Syrian Arab Republic, Bulgaria, Cameroon.
Croatia has officially qualified for the membership in 2007, and
Zagreb believes that it has acquired enough reputation thanks to
several peace missions in which Croatians are deployed as well as
thanks to Croatia's chairmanship over a UN body, the Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC).
