ZAGREB, Dec 28 (Hina) - A gun with which a security guard of presidential candidate Boris Miksic allegedly threatened a citizen in Zagreb on Tuesday morning was not found in a car belonging to Miksic, Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun said on Tuesday afternoon.

"The weapon has not been found, and after the search of the car in the presence of Boris Miksic's lawyer, his bodyguard drove the car shortly after 17:00 hrs from the car park of the First Police Station in Zagreb," Mehun told Hina.

The spokesman denied claims by the Miksic election team that the police had confiscated his official Volvo car.

Mehun explained that the keys to the car were all the time in the possession of Miksic's bodyguard who on Tuesday afternoon was interviewed by the police.

The interview was held after a citizen reported that Miksic's bodyguard threatened him with a gun from the car. The citizen on Tuesday afternoon could not identify the bodyguard as the man who threatened him, but he recognised the Volvo car with US licence plates.

The police searched the car after they obtained a search warrant, but no gun was found. The police are continuing the investigation into the incident, Mehun said.

Miksic's election team reported this afternoon that due to the police confiscation of the car, Miksic's rally, scheduled for Tuesday evening in the city of Karlovac, had been cancelled. The team explained that all material necessary for the rally was in the car, and it also claimed that the car had consular plates.

Miksic said the police action was unjustified, describing it as a serious breach of his rights as a presidential candidate. He announced his complaint to the State Election Commission.

Mehun refuted those accusations, saying that the police had acted in the same manner in which they would act towards any other citizen, and condemned any attempt to implicate the police in the presidential race.
