Speaking at the start of his presidential campaign in a packed hall of the Croatian Journalists Society in Zagreb, Mesic said that during his term in office he had done his utmost to promote Croatia and the stability and security of the state. He added that recent events and events at the beginning of his term proved the need for protection of security and civil freedoms.
Mesic said that he would continue helping young people to make a future in Croatia and elderly people to live an easier life, as well as help ensure a more encouraging environment for entrepreneurs, harmonised development of all regions, etc.
Speaking about war veterans, Mesic said he wanted to see Croatia become a country war veterans wanted it to be.
"I want Croatia to become a country of prosperity and citizens to live off of their work and knowledge," he said.
The meeting was also addressed by the leaders of some of the eight parties which support Mesic's candidacy.
Social Democratic Party leader Ivica Racan underlined Mesic's contribution to helping Croatia overcome international isolation, to its international promotion, the establishment of the rule of law, and to numerous reforms. Peasant Party leader Zlatko Tomcic said he expected Mesic to continue having clear positions with regard to protection of national interests on the international political scene.
