ZAGREB, Dec 16 (Hina) - Major Goran Karlovic and Lieutenant Commander Hidajet Cob returned to Croatia on Thursday after a year-long stint as unarmed military observers in the UN peacekeeping mission in the Western Sahara.

The two officers were replaced by Major Robert Glavina and Captain Karlo Pilka on December 12.

The Croatian officers and their colleagues from a number of nations are monitoring the cease-fire between Moroccan forces, who have had administrative control of the former Spanish colony since 1975, and forces of the Polisario Front who are fighting for the independence of the Western Sahara.

The UN mission MINURSO was established by a UN Security Council resolution in 1991. Its task is to oversee the implementation of the peace accords, ensure the disengagement of the rival forces and prepare ground for the conduct of free elections under UN protection.
