Dignitaries of religious communities in Croatia hold meeting

ZAGREB, Dec 16 (Hina) - At an initiative of the Zagreb Roman CatholicArchbishop, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, representatives of religiouscommunities in Croatia met in Zagreb on Thursday.
ZAGREB, Dec 16 (Hina) - At an initiative of the Zagreb Roman Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, representatives of religious communities in Croatia met in Zagreb on Thursday.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Bozanic said that in the name of God and their religions, they would like to continue working on the unity and peace among the people and nations.

He also expressed a wish that today's meeting should be a sign and message to believers and citizens in Croatia to continue being "committed to peace, reconciliation, justice and mutual respect in our society".

Serb Orthodox Metropolitan Jovan, who is the head of the Serb Orthodox community in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, thanked the host of the meeting, adding that there were many topics which representatives of local religious communities should discuss and urge state authorities to make decisions for the common good.

The head of the Islamic community, Mufti Sevko Omerbasic, said that religious communities had always had great responsibility with regard to the area in which they lived and events from recent past.

"We wish those events to never recur in future relations" Omerbasic said alluding to the wars in 1990s.

A representative of the Evangelical Church in Croatia, Branko Beric, said that today's meeting was an occasion for its participants to discuss topics of common interest.

On behalf of the Baptist Church in Croatia, Toma Magda described today's meeting as an encouragement for smaller religious communities in the country.

The president of the Pentecostal Church, Damir Spoljaric, said that in a time characterised by hopelessness, religious dignitaries should advocate the culture of life, and added that he was in favour of organising meetings of this kind more frequently.

The bishop of he Reformed Christian Church in Croatia, Endre Langh, could not come to the meeting because he was ill. The chief rabbi of the Jewish religious community, Kotel Da Don, was unable to attend because he was on an official trip.
