ZAGREB, Dec 14 (Hina) - About 20 Catholic societies and movements on Monday sent an open letter to the Croatian parliament, the government and the ministry of environmental protection and zoning urging them to decide on Croatia's departure from the agreement on the Druzba Adria project connecting oil pipelines from Russia via several European countries to the Croatian Adriatic coast.

In the lengthy open letter, the Catholic associations said that after studying available materials on the project, which offered what they said unfortunately very scarce information on the issue, they expressed their outrage at the fact that the public had not been adequately informed of the "dubious benefits" which the project might bring for Croatia.

Citing ecological, economic as well as moral reasons for Croatia's withdrawal from the project, the associations call on all religious communities, civil society institutions, public figures and local and state authorities in Croatia and abroad to urge the discontinuation of the project which might "definitely threaten the existence of the current and future generations and irrecoverably destroy the natural riches of our homeland".
