BELGRADE, Dec 4 (Hina) - Miroslav Cimpl, a security employee of the US Embassy in Belgrade who caused an incident on Tuesday evening involving a motorcade of Serbian President Boris Tadic, was sentenced to 20 days' imprisonment on Saturday for a traffic offence.

According to Belgrade media who covered the trial, Cimpl expressed regret at what happened.

According to Blic, Cimpl said during investigation that he had had a dozen whiskeys the night of the incident. The daily said it remained unclear why Cimpl had turned a deaf ear to sound and light signals made by Tadic's security but continued to tail the motorcade, cut through and cross into the opposite lane.

Until the Serbian interior minister convened a press conference on Wednesday evening, it was thought that an attempt had been made on Tadic's life. At the conference it was said that what had occurred had been a traffic accident caused by a confused US Embassy driver who hit the cars in Tadic's motorcade.
